How to Brainstorm

Karoleen Fober

Many times clients will come to me with a dilemma or
problem feeling very stuck. That’s when you can call on
the process of “brainstorming” to the rescue!

Brainstorming is one of the best tools to take off the
pressure, come up with many “right” solutions, involve
others in helping you and tap into your reserve of creativity.

It also acts as a great confidence booster, especially as
you begin to see how many options there are and that there
is really no “wrong” way to do something.

BEWARE: you might start brainstorming every day!
Why? Because it is so fun, energizing and allows you to
be outrageous and goofy if you want. Remember, someone
had to be a little goofy to create those little yellow sticky
notes that made a certain company a gazillion dollars!!

So let’s get started! First, some ground rules:

  1. Define the situation/challenge/goal/project.

  2. All ideas no matter what anyone thinks earn a spot on
your list. This is not the time to judge.

  3. It can be very helpful to ask people to join in. Ask
someone to write the list as you go to to keep the process
    flowing.

  4. If you are only coming up with a couple of ideas,
challenge yourself to keep going. It is always better to
have 10-12 ideas on your list than two.

  5. Allow yourself to think “out of the box”. Some of the best
ideas are unbelievable at first, and they might turn into the
best solutions you ever dreamed up. Go ahead, go for broke
on this. This is your chance.

  6. Keep going until you can see everyone’s steam is
drying up. Do you have at least 10? Great!

  7. Now you can begin looking at the pros and cons of each
one. Jot down your notes. Again, be creative. Maybe you
will combine 2 or more of your ideas into one fabulous
    solution.

  8. Take action! Which one or several seem to be the
one(s) you want to try first. Go for it! Look at you! You’re
    on your way!

Happy Brainstorming!
Karoleen

P.S. Don’t forget about this tool. It will always be there
for you when you need to save the day.
